Internet Memes Sprout Around Occupy Movement

http://articles.sfgate.com/2011-11-23/news/30439937_1_pepper-spray-protests-internet

This article discusses Internet memes that circle around the Occupy Wall Street Movement. These memes counter the movement's seriousness and have resulted from the large group of protestors whose generation was raised on the Internet. Many protests have been a target of Internet memes like the protests in London and Egypt.

I found it interesting that memes have resulted in events due to the group of people involved.

LOLCats

http://icanhascheezburger.com/2008/05/15/funny-pictures-cuz-of-catnip-addicshun/#top

I found this iteration of LOLcats interesting. It is rare to find an iteration of this meme that is controversial even in the slightest way, but I feel like this brings up a few controversial issues. Many of the comments on other strands of this iteration talk about how it could possibly be offensive because not all people the live below the poverty line have drug problems.

my jeans

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DwT_2QQU64

If you thought it could not get worse than Rebecca Black, think again. I present to you...My Jeans! by Jenna Rose.

Music videos, such as "Friday" and "My Jeans" have become a popular new trend. Kids (well, really their parents) can purchase studio time along with all the ins and outs of making a video, in hopes of making it big. "Living the American Dream." But please...how far is it going to go?! Believe it or not, this girl can actually sing. I watched her perform on a late-night talk show (which is how I found out about this song).

With over 14 million hits, this video went viral, however, it was not over night like Rebecca Black. Why? Probably because people have a "been there done that" attitude about all the new 10 year old music videos coming out. Did it die after "Friday?" Possibly. But if so, why does "My Jeans" have 14 million hits?! For me personally, these types of videos are like a bad train wreck...I cant help but to watch them.

Jim Carrey's Message to Emma Stone

http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/events/jim-carreys-message-to-emma-stone#.TlvBfXP41TE

Jim Carrey's love message to Emma Stone was not only extremely hilarious/creepy, but gained almost 400,000 views in a short 48 hours. Responses to this video were posted via twitter and youtube from not only Emma Stone, but fans of both celebrities. Kathy Griffin joined in on this as well with a parody love video message to Justin Beiber. I find it fascinating that something so silly has been talked about all over the web and television as a form of "celebrity news." I first heard about this on E! News and the title of it was "Breaking News! Jim in love with Emma."
